How to choose a self-cleaning litter box for your market

Drum size, cat weight range, waste handling and app behaviour — the four specifications that decide whether a litter box sells or comes back as a return.

A self-cleaning litter box is the highest-ticket item in most pet catalogues and the highest return risk. Four specifications decide whether it works in your market.

1. Drum size is not a marketing number

70 litres and 76 litres sound interchangeable until you put a 6 kg cat in one. Larger drums mean less frequent emptying, but they also mean a bigger carton, higher freight and a unit that may not fit the bathroom it is sold for. Check the outer carton dimensions against your shipping tier before you commit.

2. Cat weight range tells you who it is for

A 1.5–10 kg range covers most domestic cats. If the lower bound is 2.5 kg, the unit is not appropriate for kittens, and the returns will come from exactly those customers. Publish the range on the listing, not just on the box.

3. Waste handling is where products differ

Sifting into an open tray, bagging and sealing, or a rotating drum with a disposable liner — each has a different consumable, a different smell profile and a different failure mode. Bagging and sealing is the only one that genuinely allows a week away from the tray.

4. App behaviour after the novelty

Ask what the app shows on day thirty. A chart nobody opens is worse than no chart, because it is a support burden. The features that survive are the ones tied to an action: a weight change alert, a full-waste warning, a fault code that tells the owner which part to check.

Ask your supplier for the fault-code list before you order. It is the fastest way to judge whether the product was designed for support or only for the photograph.
